Wendyz Zheng 鄭嘉嘉

“Don’t Give A . . .” is Wendyz first album of all original songs written and performed in English. The songs were recorded during 2014 / 2015 and mark an international ‘coming out’ for Wendy after 5 years working in the predominantly Canto-Pop arena.

AWAKENING - OROCHEN

This is the second major collaboration between singers from the Orochen Minority in the remote forested areas of northern China and composers from Schtung Music.

The five singers, representing three generations of Orochen women, tour extensively to promote the Orochen culture, and spent several days with Schtung recording a mix of traditional folk songs and sacred Shamanistic vocal pieces. These were then placed in modern settings to suit the original emotional intent of the pieces, ranging from acoustic, drawing on musicians from the Hong Kong Philharmonic & Chinese Orchestras, to more ambient and atmospheric moods with subtle electronic nuances.

PARK HYATT SHANGHAI Vol. 1, 2, 3

The Park Hyatt Shanghai Collection was launched to celebrate the second anniversary of this unique ‘Modern Chinese Residence’ during the 2010 Shanghai Expo. The three self-contained albums in the collection are a diary of the first two years of the hotel’s life, reflecting on the fictional story of a couple who meet there for the first time and how their lives are changed as a result.

“Prelude - 24 Hours” is the soundtrack to a chance meeting between two strangers at the hotel’s Grand Opening Party. The music charts the emotions that surface during the course of that evening and the next day from both character’s perspectives. There is an air of 1930s glamour running through the songs.

“La Nature - 48 Hours” is a meditation on time passing. Titled to evoke the concept of a lost weekend, it is an impressionistic suite gently carrying the listener from late summer through to early spring the following year.

“Passion - 72 Hours” celebrates the explosive reunion of the couple at the hotel in the run up to the Shanghai 2010 Expo and encompasses a mélange of musical styles indicative of the cosmopolitan mix that is Shanghai today.

PRESENCE – GIORDANO LADIES III (2007)

PRESENCE is the third album Schtung / Giordano Ladies co-production.

The overall feel of the album is slightly darker than the earlier releases, with a subtle underlying sense that things are not all quite what they might seem. The theme of PRESENCE emerged from a sense of being true to yourself – whether creating fashion or music - rather than spending an eternity trying to ‘second guess’ the world and everyone in it. What you wear or to listen to in any given moment is simply a reflection of who you are in this moment.

YOUR STORY and PERSUASION, two vocal outings from featured singer June Tang, both challenge the listener to stop hiding in the past (and future) and take a step into the present moment – to ‘be who you are’. This sense of ‘responding to the moment’ also guided the recording sessions for the album:

“ the tracks are like different moods or impressions arising and then falling away but it all happens in this place called ‘now’. It’s like the fabric of life . . . unpredictable”.
Melinda Wong: Brand Manager / Giordano Ladies.

PRESENCE is available in Giordano Ladies stores and at HMV & Hong Kong Records.

SOUNDS OF PLATEAU (2007)

Over a year in the making, this double CD project for Plateau Spa at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong marks a major step forward in creating music for a specific venue. In a sense the music is ‘an installation piece’.

Tracks on CD1 were composed by four longtime Schtung collaborators working with Producer Morton Wilson especially to be played in the Plateau Courtyard area, and the music on CD 2 was designed to accompany a massage treatment, with overall flow and tempo of the tracks determined by the musicians in consultation with on site therapists and Spa Manager Niamh O’Connell.

The album was launched at a live event in the Plateau Poolhouse featuring two of the composers (Johnny Yim & Allan Lau) with soloists from the Chinese Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic.

SOUNDS OF PLATEAU is available at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and other Hyatt Spa properties in Asia. Commercial release is planned for early 2008.

PRELUDE – PARK HYATT SHANGHAI (2007)

When it opens in 2008 Park Hyatt Shanghai will arguably be the most visible hotel in the world, not only because of the expectations as a Hyatt flagship in one of the world’s most exciting cities, but also due to its sky high location. It will be the highest hotel on the planet with a Lobby on the 88th Floor.

Schtung was asked to compose a suite to announce to the world that a Shanghai Park Hyatt was coming and the approach was simple – elegant, modern but with an underlying echo of a bygone era – the mystery and the romance of all that the word ‘Shanghai’ conjures up.

The music on this EP contains two ‘blues waltzes’ that are cinematic in scope, and a softer jazz piece, featuring Erhu virtuoso Hsin Hsiao Hung, that is reminiscent of a Sunday picnic in Shanghai circa 1930s, complete with champagne.

The full-length album will follow with the official opening in July 2008.

YE LAI XIANG – SHANGHAI TANG (2006)

Shanghai Tang asked Schtung Divas team Ian Widgery & Morton Wilson to produce and then remix a track featuring new Universal Music Shanghai diva Isabella Huang Ling.

This song - a 1930s classic – was recorded with a full live big band arrangement in Shanghai with Isabella adding vocals to this ‘period’ version. Additional recording ad post production was done in Hong Kong and a ‘Lemon Jelly’ style mix was produced for the single, with a special club ‘Runway Mix’ also developed by Widgery for the Fall / Winter 2006 Fashion Show in Shanghai.

This project marks Schtung’s third collaboration with Shanghai Tang – see Shanghai Divas & Nomads.

(Schtung Music also produced remixes for Robbie Williams & Gorillaz during the course of 2006 - more Asian Remix collaborations are planned with international and Asian artistes.)

THE SHANGHAI DIVAS REMIXED (2003)

Shanghai in the 1930’s was ‘The Paris of the East’ with a glamorous and sophisticated nightclub scene. The chanteuses of the day were the megastars and Pathe Records was there to record them in all their glory. The music from this era is a sensuous mix of jazz, swing and tango with a uniquely Chinese undercurrent.

In early 2003 Schtung Executive Producer Morton Wilson, introduced the songs to visiting London D.J. & Producer, Ian Widgery, and the two worked with some of the original releases by Bai Kwong, Chang Loo & Li Xian Lang and proposed a joint venture release to EMI, who own the Pathe catalog and were very receptive to the idea.

The album had its Asian release late 2003 as “Pathe 100: The Original Shanghai Divas Redefined” with a limited edition single going out in KEE Magazine and a licensed release by SHANGHAI TANG internationally. Worldwide release by EMI UK followed late 2004. The album was re-titled ‘The 1930’s Shanghai Lounge Divas Remixed’ with a Bonus CD of the original 1930s recordings added to the package.

‘Divas’ has been extremely well received internationally with high rotation airplay on KCRW in L.A., and licenses from Claude Challe and others. The album enjoys a cult status along with similar projects such as Gotan Project and the Verve Remixed series.

LA NATURE (2005)

La Nature was commissioned by Grand Hyatt Tokyo at Roppongi Hills. The CD is part of a unique Wedding Concept offered by GHT featuring a ‘Bamboo Theme’ with original artworks and table settings designed and hand made by craftsmen around Asia. The musical concept was to evoke a Zen like Kyoto setting but in a modern western ‘neo classical’ style. The arc of the music runs from late summer through winter to early spring.

Check out Grand Hyatt Tokyo at Roppongi Hills website and visit their exquisite private chapel – you’ll get the idea.

The album is available for sale at Grand Hyatt Tokyo.

 NOMAD VOICES (2004)

In 2004 Schtung was introduced to the music of the Orochen Tribe, from the forested areas in Northern China close to Siberia – Reindeer Territory. The Orochen have a tradition of recording their history and folklore in song, similar to the native American Indians; actually they are the forebears of the US tribes. The two featured tracks will be developed into a full length album project featuring the Orochen and other Inner Mongolian ethnic songs in a modern musical setting - this EP is the sampler.

The CD was launched with an exhibition of Orochen artifacts at KEE CLUB to accompany Shanghai Tang’s Fall / Winter ‘Nomads’ Collection and was also sent out in KEE Magazine to members who missed the event.

Schtung Music was the first Asian music company to create original music for leading fashion outlets, starting with the Joyce Boutique ‘Languages’ CD in 1992 and Club 21’s ‘Jam Bangle’ a year later.

‘Omotesando’ was developed with Giordano Ladies Brand Manager, Melinda Wong, as an expression of the boutique label’s personality – sophisticated and chic ‘without trying too hard’. Schtung composers developed some ‘lounge styled’ tracks and invited players from both jazz and classical backgrounds to stretch out within a modern musical framework. Several songs were also included featuring guest vocalists from Hong Kong & Singapore.

Omotesando was released commercially in HK 2004 with an Asian release late 2005 alongside GIO VOL II.
